Is your career on fire? Congratulations, but you’re still only one out of five…
What about your social life, physical fitness, financial stability or engagement with your local community?
Do people mistake your beach body for Shawn T of Insanity workout fame? Cool…
However, do you actually enjoy what you do every day, have solid, meaningful relationships and properly manage your finances?
See the Trap, Avoid the Trap, Beat the Trap
It is easier than ever to believe that career success will fulfill us. Our material-rich society sells the “climb the ladder, get the raise, bigger, better house” life every day. There is nothing wrong with striving for excellence in our careers. That is not the point.
The point is, your kids don’t want a better bike, they want more of you.
Similarly, fitness clubs are packed with “workoutaholics” who chase six pack abs but neglect quality time with friends and family. There is nothing wrong with maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We actually need to pay much more attention to physical fitness these days.
However, if your fitness is a borderline obsession, then it’s time to reassess.
Career + Social + Financial + Physical + Community = True Wellbeing
Tom Rath’s, “Wellbeing – The Five Essential Elements” examines what truly makes life worthwhile. The interdependence of all of the above five elements is crucial. If you are thriving in one or two areas, but disregarding the others, you will still be frustrated, drained and less than your best.
As he explains, “…the single biggest threat to our own wellbeing tends to be ourselves. Without giving it much thought, we allow our short-term decisions to override what’s best for our long-term wellbeing.”
Are you thriving in all of the above five elements? If you answered “yes,” congratulations.
However, know that in a comprehensive Gallup survey covering over 150 countries only 7% of participants claimed they are thriving in all five. So, most likely, you have room for improvement.
Gut-check time: Which of the five elements are you short-changing today? Who, or what, are you short-changing in the process? What changes can you make today to course correct?
